My wife and I stayed at the Shepherd's Cottage. The weather was great and this home is simply AMAZING. It's the last house of a dead end road, surrounded on three sides by beautiful mountains. A small stream runs down from them past the house. Sheep were nearby all the time, and there is a small duck pond. Idyllic is the word that comes closest to explaining this place. Now it won't be for everyone. It is about 20 minutes to drive to the town of Sneem. The nearest neighbour, Joan, the caretaker, is about a mile up the road. It is by itself.
After we arrived and got settled in, I found my wife sitting on a bench in the yard with tears in her eyes. I asked what was wrong, she said "It's so beautiful here". Unfortunately, our schedule and urge to explore did not leave us much time to enjoy the cottage itself. A mistake I hope to rectify in the future.
There are 3 very nice bedrooms. One has it's own bath, the other two share one. The bedroom we chose was #3 on the Irish Dream Cottage website. It did not have a bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was pretty impressive. Well laid out and furnished. Plenty of cooking utensils. The living area was nice with a fireplace, which we made use of every night. There was another building on the premises. It houses some gym equipment, a ping pong table, and laundry facilities.
About a week before we arrived I emailed the owner and asked if it would be possible to have a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator when we arrived. Not only was it there but a plate of chocolate covered strawberries as well. Nice touch. (Thanks Joan)
I will stop now. This place is special. And the rates are reasonable. It would be great for a couple, a couple of couples, or a family. I hope to stay here again on my next trip to the Emerald Island.
One other thing. When you drive out from the cottage, you come to a + in the road. Take the left turn and drive up Ballaghbeama Gap. Absolutely beautiful. You will eventually get to Waterville if you take the correct turns.
